TOWN & Culture

The charming market town of Arundel, nestling at the foot of the South Downs,  is famed for its castle, cathedral and abundance of antique shops. People travel from far and wide to visit the overwhelming number of listed buildings and to walk the quaint streets filled with boutique shops, galleries, restaurants, cafes and wine bars, all steeped in history.

RESTAURANTS AND CAFES 

There are some wonderful restaurants for all moods and pockets. Booking is advisable where possible.  A few are listed below:

The Parsons Table - High-end seasonal gourmet food run by a lovely husband and wife team.   Definitely worth a visit. 

La Campania  -  A family run restaurant with delicious homemade dishes, fabulous Italian wines and service with a smile.

Butlers  -  Light, airy bar and beautiful Mediterranean terrace.  Classic modern cuisine.

The Burger Shop Co - Excellent burgers and even better cocktails and craft beer. Child-friendly and well priced.  What's not to love?

Motte & Bailey Cafe - Open for breakfast, lunch and tea daily,  as well as evening tapas and wine on Thursday -Saturday. This place is a real gem, well priced and they do food to go too if you fancy a sandwich on the go.

The Steakist - Open for lunch and dinner,  offering prime meat, fish or vegetable steaks cooked to perfection on the extreme heat of their specially commissioned robata grill - Great atmosphere.

The George Pub at Burpham - Located in the small village of Burpham the George focuses on 'localness' which is an essential part of their approach. They offer freshly cooked, locally sourced and seasonal produce of the best quality throughout the year.

Shopping

Antique shops in Arundel are second-to-none but there are also  clothing and household shops in which to rummage. The best ones we think are:

French Loft - A hidden warehouse  (behind the Co-op) beautifully decorated and filled with French antiques. It is hard to not buy everything in here.

Pots & Posies   This beautiful shop offers one of pieces of stunning homeware and gifts sourced from around the world.

The Old Castle Fudge Shop - Lovely old-fashioned sweet shop with an extensive range of fudge, sweets, chocolates and ice cream. Hard to walk past without entering.

Fanny Adams - Great clothes and great prices, Something for everyone.

Arundel Interiors - Interiors shop stuffed full of goodies including antiques, furniture, home decor and gifts.

 
 

BARS AND PUBS

After a long day of sight-seeing and shopping sit back and relax in the array of bar and pub options in Arundel. Our favourites include:

The Eagle Pub - Warm friendly family--run pub that offers great homemade food.. Also known for its live music, it is worth checking their website for the list of upcoming and regular events.

The Black Rabbit - only a 6 minute drive or a 30 minute walk, this pub serves great food and is situated right on the river.  It has outdoor tables as well as a roaring fire in the winter.

The George at Burpham - Short drive or about a 25 minute walk over the river from Arundel, this popular country pub serves excellent  food. The traditional 17th century building has a great atmosphere and is loved by locals.

culture and other local activities 

There is so much to do and see in and around Arundel.   There are fantastic walks in the Park and along the River Arun, amid stunning scenery.  It is  only a short drive to Chichester and Brighton and  is even nearer the unspoilt beach of Climping.  

Arundel Castle - This majestic castle, nearly 1000 years old, is a must. You can spend all day there.  Why not take a picnic, spread a rug and relax with a feast in the beautiful grounds after you have enjoyed hours looking around the castle?  Various events happen throughout the year so check the website before you visit. 

Arundel Cathedral - Just at the top of the road, you cannot miss it. Free to enter and walk around,  it is truly staggering both inside and out. 

Arundel Wetland Centre - This gorgeous nature reserve has wildlife hides,  boat safaris,  and an amazing reedbed boardwalk. Open 364 days a year;  good for both children and adults. 

Arundel Festival - Each August Arundel is awash with art, music, food festivals, historic tours and much more. It is an action-packed time for the town.  Check the website for dates and a full list of events.

Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival Meetings  -    Bennet House is ideally situated for accommodation for these two extremely popular events. Check the Goodwood website for details.
